In medieval times the island of Manabeshima was home to a corps of master mariners called the Manabe Navy. The community they founded is a symbol of the heritage of the Bisan Islands as a maritime traffic center. The village is a maze of narrow lanes without regular intersections or cross streets, a defensive design typical of the Warring States period.
