The Tonosho Hommachi district is one of the best-preserved old villages of the Bisan Islands. The layout is an intricate network of narrow lanes, giving the visitor the experience of entering a maze. It is therefore called the Maze Town.
Saikoji temple is the main landmark in this district. Its impressive red three-story pagoda is a marker to help navigate the neighborhood, and also a viewpoint overlooking the maze of passageways and buildings. Saikoji is the 58th stop on the 88-temple Shodoshima Pilgrimage route.
